Updates from Senator Tobash:

Are You Getting More Telemarketing Calls?
If you signed up for the state’s Do-Not-Call list but are still receiving telemarketing calls, you may need to renew your registration. Under state law, registrations are only active for five years. The Do-Not-Call list, established in 2002, has been successful in reducing solicitations to both residential and mobile numbers. However, exceptions to the Do-Not-Call law allow political candidates, charitable organizations, and entities with whom there is a business relationship to place calls to your phone number.

Legislation has passed the House to make the registrations permanent, but that bill is stalled in the Senate. Many Pennsylvanians are also on the national Do-Not-Call list, and registrations on that list are permanent.

Slow Down for School Buses, Pedestrians

School bells will be ringing soon as local school districts will start classes in the next couple of weeks. Motorists are reminded to use additional caution on roadways with school buses and other school transportation vehicles soon taking to the road.

Pennsylvania law requires that motorists stop at least 10 feet away from school buses when their red lights are flashing and their stop arm is extended. Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm is withdrawn. Do not proceed until all the children have reached a place of safety.

Penalties for failure to obey school bus safety laws can result in a $250 fine, five points on a driving record and a 60-day license suspension. Parents are reminded to ensure that their children are at the bus stop early to avoid rushing. Students should stay where the bus driver can see them while boarding or exiting the bus.
